Spalted Lime Bowl with Carved and Gilded Rim

Diameter - 48cms

This was a slice from a Lime tree which had been felled to make room for a new Scout headquarters here in Newbury. It had been put on my "bulk pile" of logs and butts and after about a year I plucked up the courage to try to make a bowl out of it (the log weighed in excess of 40 kgs and was out of balance when I mounted it on the lathe). Having been brought in from outside in the weather, it naturally dried out during the turning process, and some small cracks appeared. These were filled with powdered brass and aluminium and resin. The wood was beginning to spalt and also showed some attractive colour variation. I hand carved the rim and finished it with gilding cream. The bowl was finished with seven coats of Danish Oil and a light coat of beeswax.
