Carved and Brass-inlaid Platter in Anglesey Burr Oak,

Diameter - 36cms

This was made from some old waney-edged boards which I was able to obtain from the workshop of an Anglesey carpenter who had died some 20 years prior to me being offered the wood. The boards were in very soiled and stained condition, but bone dry. I used powdered brass to fill some of the larger holes in this particular piece, and hand carved the pattern around the rim of the dish. The platter was finished with ten coats of Danish Oil, applied over a period of three weeks, and rubbed down with very fine steel wool between each coat, before finally buffing with a coat of beeswax. This has resulted in a very tactile piece with a subtle and deep sheen.
