"Firmament" - Wall Sculpture

Burr Oak and Inlaid Brass

( ca.54cms x 52cms)

This was my first attempt at creating a true sculptural piece on the lathe, and it was a scary but very rewarding experience. Removing the bark from the "knobbly" side of the burr was a slow and painstaking process, using a small spike and a screwdriver , but was worth the effort as more and more of the wonderful spikey and knobbly surface was revealed below the bark. I imagined matter(represented by the inlaid brass) swirling in Space, and decided to place a newly formed world in the centre, with loose matter swirling in the void between the new world and an outer circle of very distant stars and planets, represented by the broken ring of textured wood at the periphery of the turned area. This leaves the rough surface of the burr as the outer depths of space - like some unknown Black Hole, full of uncertainty.

This is one of three pieces I have had accepted into the West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios Exhibition - "Insight 2011"
